Notebook containing lecture notes on natural history, given plausibly at the Collège Royal de Moulins, for the academic years 1835-1836 and 1836-1837. Detailed table of contents (containing lecture number and lecture description) divides the lectures in 4 categories and by academic year. First academic year includes, (human) physiology (lectures 1-10) on pages 1-50; and zoology (lectures 11-29) on pages 51-175. Second academic year includes zoology (lectures 30-47) on pages 176-226; botany (lectures 48-53) on pages 227-244; and geology (lectures 54-56) on pages 245-256. Notes are well organized and divided with headings and sub-headings and enhanced with elaborate tables and with illustrations of various sizes. The human physiology portion of the notebook includes beautiful anatomical drawings, some of which are painted in vivid watercolors. Zoology, comprising a major part of these lectures, is systematically organized and based on Georges Cuvier's anatomical classification of animals, as indicated by a note in the table of contents. The zoological lectures begin with simians followed by mammals (insectivores, bears, rodents, hyenas, cats, marsupials, ungulates, pachyderms, horses, whales, etc.). Birds are broken down into raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, etc. Lastly, they treat reptiles and invertebrates. Botany and geology cover a relatively small portion of the lectures
Authorship (indicated by an anonymus light pencil notation in French at top edge of title page) is attributed to J. E[ugène] Ducrot, whose notes are supposedly based on Mr. Denoue's lectures at Moulins. E. Ducrot signature is found on upper left hand corner of first page of table of contents. "Almanach de l'Université Royale de France et des autre établissements d'instruction publique", année 1839, indicates that a certain M. Denoue was lecturer at Collège Royal de Grenoble and taught both physical sciences and natural history classes. The Almanach for 1836, indicates that M. Denoue was lecturer at Collège Royal de Moulins and was assigned to teach physical sciences, but the slot for natural history lecturer was left blank. We can make a plausible deduction that M. Denoue was eventually assigned to teach also natural history in 1836 at the Collège Royal de Moulins
Text written in pen with neat elegant hand. Fine illustrations, with meticulous attention to detail. Some of the illustrations are watercolors; the bulk are ink or pencil. Author provides the lecture number for each lecture, however, by the end of the first year he starts to neglect this task, and by the second year, other than the first and second lectures, the lecture number is lacking. However, the neatness of the handwriting and quality of the illustrations suggests that the manuscript is in an after-the-fact edited transcription of the original lecture notes taken in class by the author. The manuscript does not state when it was physically written down, but given the manuscript's length, it is plausible that the author transcribed his notes periodically as the course was in progress, while the lectures were fresh in his mind
Initial 8 unnumbered pages consist of the title page, followed by a blank page, 4 pages with table of contents, and a blank leaf. The following 256 pages of notes contain pagination in manuscript at the upper right hand corners. Seven final pages are blank and unnumbered
